?Frequently asked questions about crushed hay bedding
Is crushed hay bedding also safe to eat?
Yes, it is made from 100% meadow hay from Southern Estonia and is safe for small pets to nibble. It works both as natural bedding and as an extra source of hay.
Is it low-dust and suitable for sensitive pets?
The hay is finely processed to reduce dust, which makes it suitable even for small animals with more sensitive respiratory systems.
How thick should the layer of bedding be?
Spread an even 3–5 cm layer on the bottom of the enclosure. Remove soiled areas regularly and top up with fresh bedding to keep the living area dry and clean.
Is crushed hay bedding suitable for all small pets?
It works well for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters and other small rodents. Just make sure your pet always has separate fresh hay available in a hay rack for eating.
How often should I change crushed hay bedding?
We recommend spot-cleaning dirty areas every day and fully replacing the bedding layer at least once a week. For larger pets or several animals in one enclosure you may need to change it more frequently.
Can I mix crushed hay bedding with wood shavings or pellets?
Yes. Many owners mix crushed hay with wood shavings or pellets to get better absorbency and a softer, more natural surface for the animal. Always ensure that all materials used are safe for small pets.
Is crushed hay bedding suitable if someone in the family has allergies?
The hay is finely sifted to minimise dust. If a family member is very sensitive, it is a good idea to clean the enclosure in a well-ventilated room and, if needed, use a mask while handling the bedding.
How should I store crushed hay bedding?
Store the bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid damp basements or balconies so the hay does not absorb moisture or start to mould.
Can used crushed hay bedding be composted?
Yes, used bedding is great for compost. Remove larger waste, mix the bedding with other garden and kitchen scraps and let it decompose – later you will have rich compost for your plants.
